Sports Premium Announcement – What does it mean?

The government’s latest announcement around PE and school sport funding has naturally created a lot of conversation across schools, trusts, PE leads and external providers across the country.

Whenever a long-standing funding model changes, uncertainty follows.

Schools begin asking questions like:

  • What happens to PE provision?
  • What happens to lunchtime clubs?
  • What happens to breakfast clubs and wraparound care?
  • Will schools still work with external providers?
  • How will safeguarding and quality assurance work moving forward?
  • What standards will schools now be expected to meet?

At Super Star Sport, we completely understand those concerns.

But the biggest message we want schools to hear right now is simple:

Please Do Not Panic

The government has announced a package worth more than £1 billion over the next three years to support PE and school sport across England. This includes investment into a brand-new PE & School Sport Partnerships Network, transition funding for schools and further investment into facilities and opportunities for children to become more active.

This is not the end of school sport support.

In our opinion, this is the beginning of a major reform of the industry — and ultimately, we believe that can become a very positive thing for schools, children and high-quality providers.

The reality is that children still need to move.

Children still need to smile.

Children still need positive experiences with physical activity.

And schools still need support.

The current education system is under enormous pressure. Recruitment challenges remain significant across the sector, with schools continuing to face difficulties attracting and retaining staff. Teachers are under huge pressure and schools are trying to deliver more than ever before with stretched budgets and stretched teams.

That is why we strongly believe external providers will continue to play a hugely important role in supporting schools moving forward.

However, we also believe the industry has needed reform for a long time.

Raising Standards Across School Sport

For many years, standards across the sports coaching and physical activity sector have varied significantly.

There are some absolutely brilliant organisations delivering incredible work in schools every single day.

But there are also providers operating without the systems, safeguarding standards, training structures or operational support that schools deserve.

We believe the government’s latest direction of travel is likely to place far greater importance on:

  • Safeguarding
  • Quality assurance
  • Staff training
  • Professional deployment
  • Accountability
  • Operational structure
  • Qualified and compliant delivery teams

And honestly, we think that is a good thing.

Children deserve safe, enthusiastic and high-quality experiences in sport and physical activity.

Schools deserve trusted partners.

And the best providers in the sector should welcome higher standards.

At Super Star Sport, we certainly do.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

This conversation is about far more than just PE lessons.

It is about the entire school day.

It is about:

  • Active breakfast clubs
  • Lunchtime provision
  • Wraparound care
  • PE lessons
  • Extra-curricular clubs
  • Physical wellbeing
  • Confidence building
  • Mental health
  • Social development
  • Helping children enjoy movement and activity from a young age

The statistics around children’s activity levels remain a major concern nationally.

Too many children are inactive.

Too many children lack confidence in sport.

Too many children are spending less time moving and playing.

This is why investment into school sport matters so much.

Not simply because of sport itself — but because active children are happier, healthier and more confident children.

Schools Do Not Need To Rush Decisions

One of the most important things schools should understand is that transitional funding and further guidance are still expected as the government reshapes the sector.

The current guidance remains in place during this transition period and further detail is expected over the coming months.

Our advice to schools would simply be:

Stay calm.

Keep children active.

Continue delivering high-quality provision.

Wait for the next stages of guidance before making major decisions.

We appreciate that many schools may currently be wondering:

  • Who will deliver PE moving forward?
  • What will happen with lunchtime clubs?
  • What does this mean for wraparound care?
  • Should we change providers?
  • Will funding still support activity provision?

The honest answer right now is that further detail is still coming.

But what we do know is this:

Children still need activity.

Schools still need support.

And high-quality providers will continue to play a huge role within education.

Why Super Star Sport Is Excited About The Future

Over the last few years, we have worked incredibly hard to raise standards across our organisation nationally.

Across our 30 franchise territories nationwide, we currently support and employ more than 250 sports coaches delivering PE, wraparound care, holiday camps and physical activity programmes to thousands of children every single week.

We have invested heavily into:

  • Safeguarding systems
  • Staff training
  • Quality assurance
  • Compliance
  • Coach development
  • Operational support
  • HR infrastructure
  • Training & Development departments
  • Safer deployment standards

Safeguarding sits at the heart of everything we do.

We are proud to partner with CPOMS around safeguarding support and education, helping ensure children remain safe within educational settings.

We have developed minimum standards of deployment across our coaching teams to ensure our staff are compliant, qualified and fully prepared to work professionally within schools.

And we are continuing to invest in people every single year.

Because we take our role within education seriously.

Billy Densham, Director at Super Star Sport, said:

“Schools do not need to panic. Children still need to move, smile and feel safe every single day, and that has not changed.

We believe this reform could become a hugely positive step for the industry if it raises standards around safeguarding, coaching quality and operational professionalism.

Schools deserve trusted partners who genuinely care about children, and we are incredibly excited to continue leading from the front as the industry evolves.”

Angelo Ciccarelli, Founder of Super Star Sport, added:

“For a long time, this sector has needed clearer standards and stronger accountability.

We welcome any changes that help improve the quality of provision children receive across the country.

There are some brilliant providers working in schools every day and we believe reform done properly can help strengthen the industry, support schools and create even better opportunities for children to become active, healthy and confident.”

The Future Of School Sport Is Still Bright

At Super Star Sport, we genuinely believe the future of school sport remains incredibly exciting.

The government investing more than £1 billion into the sector shows just how important physical activity, wellbeing and school sport are becoming nationally.

We believe the providers who continue investing into:

  • Safeguarding
  • Training
  • Professionalism
  • Compliance
  • Operational excellence
  • High-quality delivery

will become even stronger long-term partners for schools moving forward.

Most importantly, children will benefit.

And that must always remain the priority.

Children need to be active.

Children need to build confidence.

Children need positive role models.

Children need to smile.

And schools deserve the support to help make that happen.

If your school would like support around PE provision, breakfast clubs, lunchtime clubs, wraparound care or wider physical activity opportunities, the Super Star Sport team would love to help.
