What Does a Sports Coach Do?
A sports coach works with children, young people or adults to help them stay active, learn new skills and enjoy sport. In primary schools, this includes:
- Delivering curriculum PE lessons aligned to the national curriculum
- Leading after‑school clubs, lunchtime activities and holiday camps
- Supporting PPA cover for teachers during planning time

Qualifications & Skills Needed
Becoming a sports coach doesn’t always require a degree — what matters most is your energy, attitude and ability to inspire children. However, gaining recognised qualifications and experience will boost your employability and confidence.
Key Qualifications and Training
- Coaching Awards – National Governing Body (NGB) certifications are widely respected and help you specialise in different sports:
- Safeguarding Training & DBS Check – Essential for working with children; most employers (including schools) require this before you start coaching.
- First Aid Training – Basic first aid is often mandatory for youth sports coaches to ensure safety during sessions.
- afPE Level 5 & 6 Primary PE Qualification – For those aiming to lead or specialise in primary PE delivery, the afPE Level 5/6 qualification is a recognised standard for physical education specialists in schools.
